Travelling overseas with your beacon

Distress beacons work all over the world so you can take your New Zealand coded beacon with you overseas.

If your beacon is activated, the rescue authority in the area you are in and the Rescue Coordination Centre NZ will be alerted. The two Rescue Coordination Centres will share details to provide the best rescue for you.

Before travelling:

  • Check with your airline about travelling with your beacon on a flight or see the Civil Aviation Authority New Zealand website for advice
  • Check with the rescue authorities in the country you are visiting as there can be different rules for using beacons in some countries.
  • In many countries a SAR response is not free – check to ensure that your travel insurance will cover you should you use your beacon or require emergency services.
